Avalanche sign Taylor Makar to contract extension, hopefully Cale is next

The Colorado Avalanche signed Taylor Makar to a two-year contract extension on Monday morning.

Hopefully brother Cale is next.

Taylor Makar, 25, played his first full professional season in 2025-26, including his NHL debut on Nov. 1. He competed in 12 games with the Avalanche.

The Calgary native also dressed in 52 regular-season contests for the AHL’s Colorado Eagles and registered 24 points (14 goals, 10 assists) to rank sixth on the team in goals and 10th in scoring. 

The duo of Cale Makar and Taylor Makar played in 12 games together this past season and became the first siblings in Avalanche history to both appear in the same game for Colorado since relocation. They joined Anton, Peter and Marian Stastny as the only brothers in franchise history to do so. 

Avalanche GM Joe Sakic said earlier this month that Cale will play his entire career in Denver and he’s focused on getting a massive extension signed this summer. Cale has one year left on his deal for the 2026-27 season.

It’s good business by the Avs to reward Taylor with a new contract while also knowing what’s looming with Cale. In a perfect world, both brothers play together for a long time in the Mile High City.
