Rockies’ Dollander faces Tommy John surgery as he lands on 60-day injured list

The Rockies’ pitching-injury woes went from bad to worse.

Chase Dollander, the 2023 first-round pick who delivered some dominant appearances early this season, was transferred by the Rockies from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day designation, with manager Warren Schaeffer telling media in his pre-game availability that Dollander’s recent elbow issues are a wort-case scenario.

The Colorado Rockies’ television broadcast reported Friday night that Dollander would seek a second opinion.

That would be a devastating short-term blow for Dollander, who showed signs in April and May that he could be the potential ace the Rockies desperately need as they look to rebuild. Dollander posted a 3.89 ERA and a 1.295 WHIP over 10 appearances — including three starts — before he landed on the 15-day injured list due to what was initially diagnosed as right-arm tightness. He had a 3.00 ERA over eight appearances as either a starter or the primary pitcher following an opener.

The procedure not only would end his 2026 season, but sideline him deep into the 2027 campaign.

DOLLANDER JOINS QUINTANA AS ROCKIES STARTERS ON 60-DAY IL

Jose Quintana landed there due to an elbow sprain that was deemed to not require surgery. The earliest that the veteran left-hander could return would be in late July, just before the trade deadline.

Reliever Welinton Herrera also recently landed on the 60-day injured list. He, too, suffered an elbow injury requiring Tommy John surgery.

Meanwhile, on the field, left-hander Sean Sullivan made his major-league debut Friday night for Colorado against the A’s at Las Vegas Ballpark. Sullivan lasted just three innings before leaving due to illness.
