Rockies provide the fireworks in 15-3 rout of Giants

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Jake McCarthy’s leadoff homer in the first inning launched the Rox on a night that saw them blast the San Francisco Giants early and often, pulling away for a 15-3 romp in front of a throng of 47,655 at Coors Field on Friday night.

The fans on hand didn’t have to wait until the post-game fireworks show for the big bangs to rock the stands. In fact, they took a lead on the first pitch thrown by San Francisco starter Logan Webb, as Jake McCarthy launched a sinker 440 feet into the Colorados bullpen. The next four Rockies batters reached base, with two more runs coming home.

Ezequiel Tovar kept up the pressure with a two-run homer in the second to expand the lead. Two more runs scored in the third, as Cole Carrigg set up the offense with a leadoff triple.

In the fifth inning, the Rox burst the dam. Working against Giants reliever Matt Gage, the Rockies loaded the bases without recording an out, then McCarthy swooped in with a grand slam to push the lead to 11-2. After a Mickey Moniak groundout, four-consecutive Rockies reached base. setting up three more runs.

Colorado improved to 36-53 and is unbeaten in July.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Ryan Feltner had plenty of run support, but he delivered on his own account Friday night, going six innings and allowing six hits without a walk while limiting the Giants to a pair of earned runs.

Feltner now has quality starts in five of his seven appearances since returning from the injured list in late May. His post-IL ERA now stands at 3.23.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Colorado enjoyed its seven-run explosion in the fifth inning, pushing its lead to 14-2.
