Rockies ride 7-run inning to split with Marlins

Rockies Report, Game 88:

Leading 5-4 heading into the sixth primarily on the strength of Mickey Moniak’s first-inning solo homer and Jake McCarthy’s two-run shot in the fourth to put them in front, the Rockies dialed in and had seven-straight players reach base after after Kyle Karros was caught looking for the first out. None of them did so via extra-base hits; it happened via five singles, a walk and Cade Gibson plunking Willi Castro. McCarthy had the biggest moment with a 2-RBI single, pushing him to a 4-RBI day.

The Rockies added a pair of eighth-inning runs on a Cole Carrigg sacrifice fly and a Brett Sullivan single for the final margin.

Colorado improved to 35-53 and has averaged seven runs a game over the last eight contests dating back to last Thursday.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Walks were the bugaboo for Michael Lorenzen, who exited after 4 1/3 innings — but did so with no decision thanks to the pop Rockies batters showed at the plate.

The first three Miami batters to open the game reached base — Liam Hicks with an infield single, Otto Lopez with a double and Kyle Stowers via the first of six Lorenzen free passes on Thursday afternoon. Another walk followed after an RBI groundout to load the bases, but Lorenzen escaped without further damage.

Lorenzen issued a pair of walks in the fourth and fifth innings; after the two bases on balls in the fifth, he was relieved in favor of Brennan Bernardino, who doused the fire in five pitches. Bernardino pitched into the sixth inning and earned credit for the win, one day after getting his first save of the season.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 6 — Hits for Moniak in the last two days as he closed the series with Miami posting back-to-back 3-hit days. Moniak had 5 hits in his previous 45 at-bats prior to Wednesday night.
