Rockies’ three-game win streak ends as Giants jump on them early

Rockies Report, Game 90:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: A first-inning Giants explosion put the Rockies into a 4-0 hole before any of them picked up a bat, and although they quickly responded via Cole Carrigg’s fourth career home run, they could never take the lead and fell 6-4 to the San Francisco Giants on the second of two fireworks nights this weekend at Coors Field.

But the Rockies wouldn’t have another hit after Carrigg’s bomb until the sixth inning, as Robbie Ray settled down and started mowing down the Rox. The only baserunners Ray surrendered in the second through fifth innings came on two-out walks. Ray allowed a pair of singles to lead off the sixth, but recorded outs on three of his next eight pitches to squash the threat.

Colorado is now 36-54 and lost a chance to ascend out of last place in the National League West this weekend.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Trouble didn’t take long to find rookie Sean Sullivan again in his fourth-major league start, as he continues to struggle to make batters miss with his mix of pitches and ultimately fell for the third-straight time.

Sullivan allowed 12 hits and two walks in his night of work, which got out of hand after he struck out Heliot Ramos for the first out. The next three Giants batters reached base before a force play on a Jung Ho Lee groundout; he then subsequently surrendered doubles to Willy Adames and Bryce Eldridge to push the Rockies’ deficit to 4-0.

Eldridge added to the damage with a solo homer in the third inning. One inning earlier, a Luis Arraez RBI single extended the Giants’ edge. Sullivan didn’t have a single clean inning and allowed multiple baserunners in all but the fourth.

Sullivan did pitch into the sixth inning, when he was relieved by Juan Mejia, leaving runners on second and third. Mejia ensured no further damage to Sullivan’s ERA by inducing a Bryce Eldridge fly out after walking Willy Adames.

But that was of small consolation to the Wake Forest product, who hasn’t been able to make matters click yet at the major-league level.
