Rockies can’t keep pace with Giants in 8-2 loss

Rockies Report, Game 95:

Colorado still trailed just 4-2 after the Giants tagged Feltner for a pair of solo home runs and a two-run fifth before chasing him.

But matters got out of hand in the eighth at the expense of recently promoted reliever TJ Shook. Making his fourth appearance of the season — and his first at the major-league level since June 6 — the Giants pounded him in the eighth inning.

Shook allowed a walk and a double to Jung Hoo Lee in the seventh inning, but induced a Drew Gilbert groundout to escape without any damage on the scoreboard.

But the eighth was a different story, and as a result, the Rockies dropped to 1-3 on this road trip and 38-57 overall.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

It got away from Ryan Feltner in a hurry in the fifth inning, when he opened the inning by allowing five-straight Giants to reach base, allowing San Francisco to break a 2-2 deadlock and ensuring that Feltner didn’t make it into the sixth inning.

Prior to the fifth, Feltner escaped trouble, pitching around three walks in those frames. He added a fourth free pass to Schmitt in the midst of his fifth-inning troubles. The two runs he yielded in the first four innings came on long balls — a first-inning shot by Casey Schmitt and one in the fourth by Bryce Eldridge.

“The command was shaky, but he reeled it in a little bit, battled through it and kind of held them at bay for a while,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said.

Unfortunately for the Rockies, not long enough, although with just five hits, the run support wasn’t sufficient. Feltner dropped to 3-3, and the 4 1/3 inning son work represents this shortest start in nearly a month, since a June 11 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: The Giants strung together two one-out RBI doubles and Willy Adames’ 2-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning.
