Hot Rockies take on MLB-best Dodgers this week

The Rockies are rolling into LA with a bit of momentum.

Colorado (37-54) took two of three from the Giants over the weekend, punctuated by Jake McCarthy’s career night — two homers, six RBI, a 15-3 laugher on Thursday — and Kyle Karros’ clutch three-run shot in the eighth to beat the San Francisco 7-6 on Sunday.

Now comes three games at Dodger Stadium against the MLB-best Dodgers (59-32). All three are 8:10 p.m. starts.

The pitching matchups:

• Monday: Kyle Freeland (2-7, 7.25 ERA) vs. Eric Lauer (4-5, 4.84 ERA)
• Tuesday: Michael Lorenzen (3-9, 6.91 ERA) vs. Justin Wrobleski (10-2, 2.80 ERA)
• Wednesday: Ryan Feltner (3-2, 4.27 ERA) vs. Roki Sasaki (3-5, 5.40 ERA)

Tuesday’s the nightmare matchup on paper. Wrobleski has been one of the better pitcher in the National League at 10-2 with a 2.80 ERA. Lorenzen, at 3-9 and 6.91, has been arguably the opposite. Wednesday is the most watchable: Feltner, the Rockies’ steadiest arm this season, draws Sasaki, who has big stuff but hasn’t put it together consistently in his second MLB season.

All-Star Hunter Goodman leads the club with 27 homers and 51 RBI. McCarthy is swinging out of his mind. And Goodman’s second straight All-Star nod gives Colorado something to actually feel good about at the break.

The Rockies sit 22 games back in the NL West and own the worst ERA in baseball at 5.54. Nobody’s confusing this club for a contender. But they’re scrapping, the young guys are showing decent signs of life.

One more thing: Colorado only needs to go 7-64 the rest of the way to top last year’s historically brutal 43-119 mark. The bar is underground, and the Rockies have already cleared it.
