Worker dies at Broncos facility; construction halted

A construction worker died Monday at the site of the Denver Broncos’ new training facility in Centennial, prompting a death investigation and a stoppage of work.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a medical emergency about 8:20 p.m. June 15 at the construction site at 13409 E. Broncos Parkway. Co-workers found the worker unresponsive in a confined ceiling area. South Metro Fire Rescue crews used tools to reach the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause and manner of death remain under investigation by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.

Turner Construction, the project’s contractor, said work at the site has been suspended while it cooperates with the investigation.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for the worker’s family, loved ones, friends, colleagues and all those impacted by this tragedy,” the company told the Denver Post.

The Broncos also released a statement.

“The Denver Broncos are heartbroken to learn a subcontractor working on our new training center passed away Monday while on-site,” the team shared. “We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the individual’s family, coworkers and friends during this difficult time.”

The death comes as the $175 million headquarters nears completion. The Broncos are set to move into the facility at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit at the end of the month, with construction in its final stages. The team broke ground in 2023. They’re replacing the building it had occupied in Dove Valley since 1990.

The new headquarters will be 30% larger than the old building, spanning three stories with an underground garage. It consolidates the team’s football and business operations on one campus for the first time in years and keeps the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse, which opened in 2014. The team celebrated a topping-out ceremony for the project last August.
